NEW YORK (WABC) -- Eyewitness News has learned a plane has crashed into the Hudson River.
The plane is a US Airways flight 1549 from LaGuardia to Charlotte. There were 146 passengers on board the flight, along with 5 crew members. There is no report on their conditions.
The plane went down near 57th street. The plane took off from LaGuardia at 3:11 p.m.
Ferries are rescuing passengers, some who are seen standing on the wings of the plane.
The plane was submerged in the icy waters up to the windows, and rescue crews had opened the door and were pulling passengers in yellow life vests from the plane. Several boats surrounded the plane, which appeared to be slowly sinking.

Pic not working for me but I'm happy to hear there are survivors. I'll hold out hope and pray that there are no serious injuries and everyone is rescued.

It looks like there are tons of survivors. They're saying it was a very gradual, controlled landing. It's 21 degrees there though and they're still in the water.

They're saying there were 148 people on the plane, and everyone got off safely. Great job by the pilot to save it with the controlled landing.

One hell of a good pilot...he certainly did it right!

155 total including crew and passengers, and not one critical injury, even in 20 degree temps and in the water.
Not only should that pilot be awarded a medal, but all of those ferry pilots who had their boats there immediately. Also, the tug operators who strung a cable through the forward exit doors keeping the plane up.
A perfect convergence of competence, ingenuity, intelligence and determination. This could have been a huge catastrophe. Good news like this at the end of the day makes all the little BS at work seem really insignificant.

That's awesome about the tugs. They didn't know that earlier when I was watching, but were confused about how the plane stayed up until everyone got out.

Great job for the pilot and aircrew and first responders.
This could have been much much worse.

Not only did that pilot land that plane so perfectly he stayed on that plane until everyone was off, he actually walked the aisle to make sure no one was left behind.

See that what happens when a company called US airlines buys cheaply made Euro-trash planes :p
just re-enforces the notion that if it ain't Boeing,I'm not going!

The European airframe actually saved the lives of 150+ people, the GE (US Made) engines were what caused that plane to crash.

I'll say it was the ground goose that did it!

I'll just say that I've seen the size of the plane, and I've seen the size of a goose ... and to say that 2 geese kicked a planes ass is just embarrassing.

Turbofans at high compression don't like impacting objects at speed. La Guardia is a horribly located airport.
Very good work by the pilot and the rescuing boats. Very big fuck you to WULF BLITZAAAA.

Eh? Let me know when you find a plane that size that'll handle sucking in birds in two engines at once.

I hate to pick a fight here, especially when it was geese that caused this and this turned out Ok for the circumstances, but why are there so many here who seem ready to stick up for Europe here and kick their own country? Especially over such petty shit. Petty in that there is almost no relevance.
You have been hanging around the liberal media too long, Kelraz. Granted you make a good living off these leaches, but still. For shame.
The pilot saved those people. I don't see Airbus getting a medal for this.

Ok. They aren't so liberal. They are a business that goes where the money is like any other. Putting a bias on the story means even more money. Responsible reporting went out the window when there was a need to fill up 24 hours of air time as opposed to just 30 minutes three times a day. Now they are just a bunch of bottom feeders who sometimes strike it rich by finding a succulent turd to exploit. Granted they did this story justice. Still, Wolf Blitzer could do his profession justice by having a massive heart attack while live on TV and giving us all something to cheer about.

Thank you a much more accurate description. What did Wolf do, I don't watch him....what did I miss?

The man tends to greatly over dramatize any event he is covering to the point of being distasteful and arrogant. A common event on the show that he hosts. It gets to the point where you just want to shake him violently and choke him until you get just a straight reporting of facts out of him. Usually he can't just do that, since he tends to try to manipulate or blindside in some kind of effort to do an investigation that professionals should be doing or some kind of political spin. If I just survived a crash into a frigid river, I would rather get warm and see my family than want a camera and Wolf Blitzer in my face trying to save the world by being the reporter that solved the case that will take the NTSB the next 2-3 years to close. He is annoying, overly aggressive and seems to have no compassion for anyone other than being at the center of the story and the first to come up with some theory as to why it happened, reguardless if what comes out of his mouth is not even what happened. He is more Barnum and Baily ring master than reporter, trying to lead the crowd and truly does capture the image of the media circus. He reminds me alot of the slimy reporter from the Die Hard series movies. He does probably make CNN alot of money though. He is the poster child for biased reporting. He would do better hosting a radio talk show, like Rush for example, where people don't expect factual reporting. This plane accident might even be a disappointment for him, since it turned out to be a heroic and triumphant day. he won't have any witches to hunt.
Heck, even his voice is enough for me to want to change the channel. I get most of my news from either online sites now where it ends up being just like reading the newspaper or I watch the BBC news.
So Rover, do you get the feeling that I just plain and simple just don't like the guy?

Back on topic: I'll bet that pilot had gone over that scenario in his head a million times, and that is why it turned out ok. Kudos to the pilot, and his quick actions.
Off Topic: I remember my mom telling me about Wolf's coverage of the first Gulf War. Every explosion that occured near him was a "SCUD missle impact" according to him. In actuality it was Patriot missles that were launching nearby....

What a relief that everyone is ok. Good news in this day an age is awesome. So much doom and gloom that when an event like this turns out for the best it's actually a good thing. One thing Leah kept saying last night is, I hope there were no kitties and puppies in the belly of the plane :(
What did Wolf do exactly? I don't really watch him or CNN much so I missed it.

Did you even read Velvet's post which I was replying to? You can't place the blame of the engines failing on the shoulders of an European company who didn't make the engines, especially when the actual engines were made by a different US based company.
Yes, I own a Chevy Corsica. I shop at Target. I just bought all new GE appliances for my house. I run an American company based here in America. But to be honest, the "buy US" is a load of bullshit anymore. The "Big 3" we are all concerned about bailing out, but we overlook that most of the foreign car manufacturers employ just as many US citizens on their foreign lines in plants down in the south as US auto manufacturers do. Both Toyota and General Motors are traded on the New York Stock Exchange and not owned by a country, but owned by investors from around the world.
You can blame my bias because I work for television networks sometimes, I'd like to blame it instead on the fact that I have free thought.

Haha. Alas, she's on her last legs. If I didn't buy a camera, a house, a few computers, new windows and appliances for said house, and so forth I'd have replaced it already :)
Its a 1995, only 60,000 miles on it.

Yes I did read Velvet's post. Considering that it was birds that brought the plane down and it was the pilot that saved the day, it doesn't matter who made the plane. Perhaps if it was a Boeing plane it would have crashed and killed everyone. Who knows. As for your free thought comment, well everyone is entitled to their opinion, even when it comes across as being somewhat conceited. What do you take me for? Some government drone? Thought is free like talk is cheap.
As for the press, I don't entirely despise the concept of the free press, but I do despise what it has become. BBC is the only news show that just presents the news. The rest, such as Fox news for the Republican/conservative bunch and CNN (Clinton News Network) for the liberals...well, it just disgusts me with all the bullshit they pull just to fill up a day. Its not even news anymore. It just editorial comment and opinion.
/shrug. Maybe after spending most of the past 6 years out of the country, I have lost all touch or I have become old beyond my 34 years.

I agree. GE engines are used by both companies actually. since this was an event that involed no loss of life of severe injuries i took a jab at airpus in jest.
