View Full Version : Vid card install issue

I decided to upgrade my old GF4 Ti4200 today to an ATI 9600XT.
The problem is that as soon as I install the ATI drivers (yes I did uninstall the NVidia ones before I switched the cards) my screen turns into total garbage after reboot (not sure how to describe tonns of extra pixels, lines etc etc show up on my desktop which shouldnt be there and it becomes worse with time).
I'm using this motherboard: http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/bv2/
And a 300W PSU: http://www.chieftec.com/products/psu/PSII%20PSU.htm
The machine works just fine if an uninstall the ATI drivers (just the GFX is slow).
Any ideas?
A: it's a hardware issue (ie lack of power from the motherboard?)
B: Software issue (ie need to reinstall windows?)
Thanks.

Look anything like this?

Something like that yes, except the corruption is not only horisontal but there are slant lines too.

Possible that its a power supply issue, but not likely since it's only a 9600, theres a utility out there. I think it's called smartGART remover or some such you should run it. It comepletely removes the old video card files.
Now, does the video screw up during your boot sequence, (bios etc) or just in windows?
Also wouldn't hurt to try reinstalling Direct X after you install the new drivers.

Just after loging into windows (boot, login screen are fine).
I'm trying the Driver Cleaner utility atm, will report back if that sloved it.

The "Driver Cleaner 3" didnt solve it. After reinstalling drivers it's still the same. Oh yea I get windows errors (the system recovered from a critical error or something like that) too if I try to run the browser.
Gonna try the smartGART and dx9 reinstall.

I've tried the following with my Radeon 9800 Pro that seems to be suffering from the same problem as your 9600:
Cleaning, remounting, re-pasting and lastly replacing the fan and heatsink.
Changing drivers, stripping drivers, re-installing old drivers, lastly reinstalling windows.
To no avail. I think it's a burned memory circuit.

nvidia drivers are complete bitch to remove, if i change video companies ati -> nvidia, or nvidia -> ati i format most of the time, just not worth the hassle

The only time I've ever had the symptoms you are describing are when the video card was/had been over heating, or when something was wrong with it.

I have put the card into a totally different machine (different chipset, different memory etc etc) that had clean install.
SP2 recognized the card, installed default Microsoft drivers and bam, the same thing.
I think it's dead, kinda shame that it's a brand new card.....

proof yet again that ATI sucks! :p

Nvidia > all
*hugs his 6800 Ultra*

I'd rather have my old 9700pro than some NVidia crap.

i agree, but i said the same thing about my ti4600, both companies are great video card makers its stupid to have a favorite and completely ignore the other
both companies currently have awsome products on the market, and no one is the under dog like Nvidia was with their FX line

Say what you will, but I have tried both and for the way I like to run my games nVidia leaves ATI in the dust.Anyone use 3DMark05? Maybe we should post our stats. I'm curious how the two cards compare.

I upgraded from a Nvidia to my ATI. I was unhappy with the image quality of the ti4600 ultra gold pro titanium I got with my new machine, and figured I'd try the 9700 pro. It was so much faster running UT2k4, with higher quality rendering, I could hardly believe it.
Synthetic benchmarks are meaningless to me, compared to real world performance. We already know that Nvidia likes to cheat on those anyway, huh?
When I rebuild my machine in the next month or so, I'll probably order an x800 and the comparable Nvidia and have the taste test challenge again.

I don't know the interworkings of bench mark tools myself...but I hear lots of tout about them. Yes, please do share your findings. As I said from my experience it's nVidia all the way obviously not yours :p

The issue I was talking about specifically was the big mess where Nvidia completely cheated on a benchmark earlier this year. Basically, they hard coded their driver to hugely optimize rendering for that exact program, by only calculating what they knew ahead of time would be in the field of vision. If you renamed the 3dmark (I think it was 3dmark) exe to something else, the results would be much slower because the renderer had to play fair.
Now, that's not very common, but it illustrates how worthless synthetic benchmarks can be. Unless your usual computer time is spent watching 3dmark run, it's a lot better to go on actual game benchmarks.

i haven't seen any video card reviews that shows the nvidia 6800 will give me anything noticable over the x800, personally i'm not into buying the high end cards, too much mula and the main stream product is much cheaper and gives very comparable performance, and since the 6600 and x700 are practically exact in performance i'm most likely going to get the x700 due to ATI's track record with the core they are using
and concidering ATI still has the lead in current image quality (albeit very little now with nvidia not using their performance enhancers) you could say ATI has the lead in gameplay

I guess it depends on allot of factors and as ******** says game benchmarks are proof in the pudding.

The same site shows a Far Cry bench mark where the ATI cards do better than the nVidia ones away. So, it just depends on what game you are playing.
Edit: poor choice of words

Yeah, Doom3 is one game that Nvidia beats the hell out of ATI on. The funny thing is though, I played through Doom3 at 1280x1024 reso with good quality and never ever had any noticable lag, except on final boss area. That's with a card two generations old (driving two displays). A current one would have to be more than enough to run the game any way you wanted.
Same with FarCry. Played all the way through it and only had one lag issue (which was so pronounced, I'm pretty sure it was an error in the game), using an old old ass ATI card.

The whole ATI versus Nvidia thing is almost as bad as Bush versus Kerry :o
(Nvidia all the way!)

By the way, to update you guys, I got the card replaced and the 2nd one works fine.
The brand is Asus....kinda strange how a card with bad memory can land on the market...they don't test these?
