I saw this on the EQ2 forums and thought it worth sharing.

The ESA released another study of gamers and I know you are all interested. Here are some highlights:

69% of American head of households play video games
33 is the average age of game players (so back off me whippersnapper)
25% of gamers are over age 50
62% of gamers are male. Means the females are catching up and nothing could make me happier.
Woman make up a larger percentage of gamers (30%) than boys 17 and under (23%).
RPG's make up 12.4% of PC game sales.
RPG's make up 7.8% of video game sales (I'm assuming this is PC and Console)
89% of parents are present at the time a video game is purchased (so no more GTA excuses)
79% of game players all ages report exercising or playing sports an average of 20 hours a month
93% of game players report reading books and newspapers on a regular basis (we're smarter) while 62% report going to cultural events such as concerts, museums, etc...
58% of online gamers are male
Video game equipment and game sales dipped from 7.4 billion in 2004 to 7.0 billion in 2005.

If you are into this kind of stuff you can check out the ESA's report (http://www.theesa.com/archives/2006/05/2006_essential.php).

I love polls...

62% report going to cultural events such as concerts...

So is a Jimmy Buffet concert considered a cultural experience now? :)

62% report going to cultural events such as concerts...

What's scary is 38% have never been to a cultural event like a concert...never been to a play...ballet....ack!!

..and how is video game defined? My mom and dad play solitaire on their computer...I'd hardly call them gamers. :(

They have a fairly lightweight definition of "gamer" that includes online poker and Yahoo-Games type things. I suspect you'd have more of the classic GameSpot crowd if you ruled out poker alone.

Video game equipment and game sales dipped from 7.4 billion in 2004 to 7.0 billion in 2005. - thats kinda interesting. Computers > 360?

Thats pretty interesting! Though not extremely suprising to me. I guess its cause I've always known the gaming world wasn't what all those people who don't game tried to lead us to believe!

Careful there Akipt. Don't be ruffling the feathers of parrotheads.

Hey, I am in a 25% group. Wonder if that is good or bad.:p

I have a feeling the decline in 2005 was mostly due to the length of time that had passed without the introduction of a new console. Yes, the XBox 360 was released at the end of 2005, but it was only available for a small portion of the year, and I'm sure many people held off on buying some games knowing that a new generation of consoles would be available in 2006.
