I was just wondering if anyone with any legal knowledge knew if a video store can actually mark your credit report with late fees?

Forget to return "Man on Man Coverage: The Gay Football Diaries" again?

Yes. (http://www.answerbag.com/q_view.php/456)
Let me understand the question though. Are you saying that you're habitually returning them late, but paying the fee, and you don't want to be seen as a late payer -- or you plan on telling Blockbuster to go fuck themselves for the $4 you still owe them for Justin Loves Kelly.
They can't report the late payments (and presumably wouldn't), but pretty much anyone with an axe to grind can report that you stiffed them.

No that movie sucked and not in a good way. No anal action and all the guys were ugly.

Bowler is obviously worried about his credit after looking at his last statement...

They sure can. To avoid it, just pay the fees if it's a chain, or if it's a smaller rental place just make up a sob story and hope they cut you a break.

I am actually contesting late fees from Blockbuster for movies I never rented and was wondering if I needed to actually care.
Thanks Palimax for the info.

Well as a former owner of a video store yes they can and yes they should report those late charges. A Video RENTAL Store is in the business of renting movies to make money. If you rent a video and keep it late they cannot make rental income on it from someone else while it is in your posession. If you rented a car and returned it late you would expect to pay extra rental wouldn't you? If a store buys a new release movie to rent it has a limited time in which to make back the purchase price as well as regular operating costs and profit before said movie is not going to rent enough to take up space on a shelf.

Not to mention the fact that movies at Blockbuster that are 1 min late are charged for another 5 day rental. Then they rent it out again to someone during that time and double the profit. Independent video chains are one thing but Blockbuster is a parasite.

If I had $1 for every time Blockbuster has mistakenly charged me late fees, I could buy a nice steak dinner. Unfortunately, there aren't any other places to rent near me. I've ripped on their on-duty manager more than once - not that he/she cares, of course.

I used to manage a Blockbuster and, assuming they operate the same where you live as every store in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area does, there are ways to verify this. For example, there are 4 cameras running during all business hours, and the tapes are kept on a 3 month rotation. Its a huge hassle to dig up the tape from a particular day and sit and fast forward it to the time youre looking for, but if you bitch hard enough one of the lazy fuckers will get off his ass and do it for you.
Also, I found out that if you call the district manager they take care of every freakin complaint any customer ever brings to them no matter how trivial it is. Kinda irritating for me, but as a customer you can pretty much get away with murder as far as Blockbuster is concerned.
Anyways I havnt worked for Blockbuster for... damn... probably pushing 5 years now (damn Im old) but the more things change the more they stay the same, give it a try. Oh and if its some friend or family member checking something out with your card on the video you are gonna feel stupid, but there you go hehe ;)

I got sick of it after the second year personally.. still felt compelled to use all 5 free weekly rentals however.. go figure.

Lol. Blockbuster is one of the *worst* video rental chains in the world when it comes to return policies and customer tracking.
I know, I worked there. Blah. I hated it, and I'm pretty sure I'll never do it again.
Ya gotta love those shifts where you go in for a 12-5, and end up working till 2am doing the manager's closing duties because they're too lazy wanking off to midget pron in the break room!

actually i used maybe half of my friends free rentals.. that ment i had enough to watch new releases, as well as movies i ment to see but missed and movies i had seen before but wanted to see again..
All in all, free movies is a great thing to have when your at a boarding school with strict curfew rules and you have to wait before the warden falls asleep before you sneak out and go clubbing in london =)
