I found this interesting: http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/24/microsoft-vista-has-fewer-first-year-vulnerabilities-than-any-m/

So much Vista hate going around, yet very little justification.

I've only had one problem with Vista and that wasn't really Vista's fault. EQ2 absolutely would not run for me until I told it to run under XPSP2 compat and as administrator. It's SoE's shotty programming!

So I might be in the few and far between column but I actually like it now after having it for a few months. Like anything else it takes a little getting used to and you can tweak it so it doesn't hog resources.

I have always heard horrible things about Vista. I got a new laptop with Vista and so far I have had no problems. The only annoying thing was the initial setting where it won't let you delete anything without three messages asking you "Are you REALLY REALLY sure you want to DELETE this FILE?." Some of the other default settings are a little too much like hand-holding to me as well but with a little effort it is quite easy to de-Macify your PC.

I don't think I've heard any "hate" for Vista related to security. Pretty much all of it has been about usability.

XP has more. Mac has had more but corrects theirs in a timely manner, XP doesn't. You see Linux is the tallest on the graph, but probably one of the safest - especially compared to XP. On Linux you need to be a super high up user and enter the root and its virtually virus free, XP not so much.

A valid point from the post's comments...

But first year vulnerabilities? Maybe they're so low because hackers don't feel like learning the new ways around windows security when there are still tons of XP machines to make into zombies.

Personally, I've had no problems with Vista on my Thinkpad... no gaming, just development and Office 2007 work though.

I'd bet there are more Vista machines active than OS X 10.4 though. So, I don't necessarily buy that as a reason to discount the numbers, comparatively.

My website, while not a true demographic sampling, shows the following browser breakdown, just for curiosity's sake:

73.60%Windows XP
8.20%Windows Vista
6.60%Windows 2000
5.80%Unknown
3.80%Mac OS X
1.80%Windows 2003
0.20%Windows 98

LOL at the .2% still using 98. I like vista so far. it did give a bit of a problem getting the new network up and running but thats more due to me not being a PC guru.
The side bar is a really cool feature.

Here are the numbers for one of my sites over the last month:

97% Windows
2% Macintosh
1% Linux
0% (not set)
0% iPhone
0% Playstation Portable
0% iPod

Breakdown of the Windows visits:

75% XP
17% Vista
6% Server 2003
2% 2000
0% 98 (7 visits)
0% ME (1 visit)
0% NT (1 visit)

When I ran the numbers for the full year, there was actually someone running Windows 95 in the stats. Yikes.

0.0% 98

I'm in the XP group from home and work, but use Vista on my main PC at home. Don't do any web browsing on that machine though.

As I have mentioned in other posts I greatly enjoy Vista Ultimate (a lot of the "cake & icing" is appealing, like Dreamscene). However by compatibility standards I could be using Windows 2000 and be just fine and dandy (minus 64-bit though).

I also enjoy Ubuntu Linux (seems to be rising in popularity among the user friendly seekers, especially for first time Linux users like myself), but ironically it is facing some odd issues with installation/graphic stability for a number of users (*sigh* me), making it currently inoperable for me.

Folks on 95 and 98? I didnt know you can actually surf the net anymore if you have those. I thought it just like locked up or something.

Until the middle of last year I still ran Windows 98 on my old laptop, since it only had a 3 GB hard drive. (The laptop is nearly 10 years old now.)

I wanna say my old z505 is running 95. 98 at best.

"0.0% PalmOS" is what I run most of the time to browse. Funny it didn't come up.
