View Full Version : Warhammer Delayed

On the day we signed the agreement to license Warhammer from Games Workshop, I promised them that we would create a great and glorious game, a truly next-generation MMORPG. Today, I have news to report; we are going to delay the release of WAR until Fall 2008. While we do not expect this announcement to be met with fanfare and cheering crowds; the additional time will be spent hammering WAR into an even better game that it is today.
During the most recent phase of beta testing, two things have become clear. One was that our key innovations - Public Quests, Tome of Knowledge and Realm vs. Realm combat - were all coming along extremely well, as was the first stage of our innovative crafting system. The second, that the game would benefit from additional iteration time as well as adding a layer of polish or two. Fortunately, as part of Electronic Arts, we are able to do just that.
While I have no doubt that the community will experience a wide range of emotions over this decision, I urge you to remember one thing (and to keep the tar cold and the feathers on the birds), that our goal has never been to release a game by a certain date but to release a great Warhammer MMORPG. We have not wavered from this goal and with the full support of Games Workshop, GOA and Electronic Arts we intend to release a glorious next-generation MMORPG.
As always, I thank the community for its support, patronage and its patience.

I'm not surprised. The game is in a dismal state right now. It might have been great 5 years ago, but it is nowhere near a competitor for any game that is out these days.

/nod, I agree.
I don't know what the problem is with most of the MMOs out there these days their development seems to suck and take forever.

Talent dilution perhaps? It seems everyone wants to make an MMO these days, is it possible there just arent enough good "idea" people to go around?

The bar has been continually raised, but it doesn't get much easier/faster to develop software.
You have games like WoW that were developed for 5+ years before its first beta. So now, it takes that sort of development effort for anyone else who wants to hit the market with competitive polish and depth.

The debacle that was Vanguard's release may also be influencing developers to ensure a finished product prior to release.

Wow, I was ready to throw this one on the heap but decided to give the beta another shot.
They are trying out different race/class combinations and continue to tweak them until they are perfect. Once complete, they shove them aside, and work on the others.
They've really been working on the graphics and performance. I've yet to experience any, and I mean ANY lag whatsoever, despite having 50+ players and about 20+ NPC's on screen (no exaggeration).
And what tickled my fancy was.....siege weapons. I actually could run up, grab a catapult or balista, and fire it in battle. Quick and dirty too. I can repair it, aim it, and fire to my hearts content.
Folks, I'm glad they delayed this one. I'm happy to say I was wrong about it. Is it perfect? No, but it's damn well FUN! PvP and PvE junkies alike are gonna flock to this beast. And there's still more dev work to come!

Yeah, the graphics are not AoC's, but in my personal opinion the performance is ace. The graphics are...warhammerish in that there's no realistic flesh tones, but at the same time the graphics are more serious than WoW's IE: Bodies seem more in proportion and a little less cartoony.
I'll keep you folks updated on how it goes. I miss my Orc. The greenskins were hilarious! "ORCS IS BEST!!!"

I was out at Mythic's studios shooting an interview for G4 earlier this month and the demo they gave us was out of this world. Hopefully the integration of PVP into the world instead of pocket "battlegrounds" which are nothing more than capture the flag games will make this game have better staying power than WoW. Bastards still haven't given me a beta key though :(

They do have battlegrounds, this is true, but the mainstay is more along the lines of huge maps (huge as in slightly smaller than a continent). The RvR PvP is on a HUGE scale. You're fighting for Reknown points (it's how you get your title up to purchase certain types of gear) as well as gaining certain control points, which in turn give you more points to try and control that map. I've not seen what happens when you control the map, but apparently you get exp and loot bonus's or something of the sort.
The big thing that I think is really cool here is how they are appeasing both the PvPer's and the PvEer's by integrating the two. Now if they'd only include guild halls and player housing (which I'm sure is on the block), they just might have something that will indeed bring the WoW players over in droves.

That was gonna be a World of Warcraft feature too, but they took it out because as you leveled to 80 generally you'd all look the same anyway. So they made all of the available looks different options in the character creator.

As far as I know it's not implemented at the moment. There was talk about it, but they want to make sure that the various classes and factions work first.
The public quests are pretty sweet, but ultimately, this game is gonna be a PvPer's wet dream hehe. :)

Yeah, I mean, I was feeling pretty dismal about the game in January (this was before they delayed it), and almost uninstalled it. But they've since updated a lot of things. It's not perfect, but certainly more polished, and has that "War" feel to it. Hehe, when you're lvl 40 (they're starting us all with lvl 40 templates to test out the Empire, Chaos, Dark Elf and High Elf factions) and you're running through a burning city, with forces amassed on either side complete wit Ballistas and Catapults for anyone who should be foolish enough to run that far...../sucks in breath....AND you're trying to reach an objective that is faction controlled in the middle and you have HUGE numbers of people fighting for it...../pant pant....yeah, I get excited. :D

Did none of you play Dark Age of Camelot (Mythic) ?
You missed a whole lot of fun if you didn't. Single best MMO to date. Severely underrated because of EQ. After it went through a few overhauls (like EQ did) it was awesome. There was so much to do in that game, and it was HUGE. You think going across the Karanas in EQ was a long trip on foot, it doesn't even compare to DAoC in size.
I guess that's why I'm not surprised at all the way this game is shaping up, because I know what the developers can do.

My son and about a half dozen of his friends all jumped into DAoC, and were rocking for a few months. By six months tho', they were all dumping off their chars and moving on, out of boredom.

To be honest, there's one game that's come up on my radar that has my interest.
Earthrise is in development. I don't know who the devs are, but from what I see on their site, it would at least warrant a look in.
http://www.play-earthrise.com/index.php?action=showstatic&id=6
I'm just getting tired of the whole fantasy thing and would love to see a Sci Fi MMO really take off. I mean, EvE Online is a success but is a different style of play and TR is holding it's own, but I mean really do well in a personal avatar explorable world.
I hope I get into the beta. If I do, I'll keep you folks posted.

SWG could have, and should have, been that game, had Sony and the Lucas folks pulled their heads out of their rear ends. I still don't understand the content decisions they made.
I'm itching for a good scifi MMO as well. I'd even tolerate raiding at this point.

Ok, so an update. They've started on the Dwarves and Orcs again. HUGE improvements, including the use of Seige weaponry in game. Graphics look more polished and shiny, and the gameplay has come a long way too. Not getting bored, having lots and lots of fun, and believe it or not, groups are not hard to come by. Community on beta seems pretty solid. Those that want their PvE and PvP to integrate into each other instead of having to choose will love this game. ORCS IS BEST!

Hehe, can't get enough of this. These guys are awesome (the Dwarves and the Orcs).
It's addictive and I can only hope the other factions have their own comedy flavours added to keep them on par with these two. Getting more into the RvR and I have to say, it's a blast.
This game introduces some new things. It's not going to be a "revolution" or anything, but I think it's what players in WoW, who've wanted their PvE and PvP at the same time, have been dreaming of. This game is still months from release and already they're ramping up lvl 40 content testing. I don't want to jinx it, but even now, it's a very solid build. No buggy graphics, no system crashes, no LDing every five minutes. Just log on, pick my character and SMASH SUM STUNTIES! :D

Just reading up on some of the stuff that's coming up. DAMN! This game keeps getting better and better. Check out the website and read up on the collectors edition. Some pretty decent stuff, considering I paid the same amount for the WoW CE and all I got was an art book and a zergling pet. :p
So yeah, this is definately a buyer for me. I've not gone through withdrawal like this since my original EQ days. I'm literally waiting by the keyboard here, hoping the beta servers open up before I have to go to work hehe. Damn, got an exam tomorrow too!
Oh! And with regard to Orcs getting bigger and Dwarf beards getting longer, according to the release info of the game, apparently it's still in there. If I see it, I'll definately let you know.

OK, playing a Dark Elf Disciple of Khane. These guys are just nasty! Just picture a priest running around in leather and scale, while weilding two swords. Each class seems to draw for their powers/abilities in different ways. Some it's a blood lust, some it's momentum, other types it's some form of drain.
When all is said and done, 6 races, with 24 classes altogether (4 per race).
The PvP is AWESOME! Fast paced, quick recovery and you never know what's going on hehe. Anyhow, gotta get to bed, exam tomorrow. I'll chat more later!

For those of you that like to click, get used to using hotkeys, especially in PvP.
The thing that impresses me the most is the actual lack of lag. I mean, yesterday I had to wait 30 minutes for a login spot because the server was full. PvP was in full swing (you can do scenarios ie: battlegrounds or open world PvP in certain areas), literally dozens and dozens of people around and lag was practically non existant.

Well, it's all sorta interconnected. Keep in mind though that you get Exp for killing players as well as Mobs.

Jeff: It's always a problem when you get into PvP and some players go around and mess with lower level players. We've taken a few steps, but the most profound measure is breaking our game up into tiers. Tiers are basically ten level groupings across the forty levels. So there are four tiers (1-10, 11-20, 21-20, 31-40). If a higher level player comes down into a tier below his level and goes into the RvR area - basically a place he's not supposed to be since he's too powerful - he'll get a warning message stating that he's too powerful for this area and he should leave now or suffer the "coward's fate." Then he gets a ten second countdown, and if he decides to stay into the area, he literally turns into a chicken. All his abilities go away except for one, the ability to peck things for one point of damage, and he's welcome to run around in the RvR area all he wants as a chicken until an enemy comes to chop him up. That's a big anti-grief measure, and it works very well.
ROFL, thats Brilliant!!

Well, they have till Christmas to release it. They're pushing the whole "25 years of Warhammer" and that's in 2008.
I'm going to be honest with you, other than the fact that there's still one more class per race (6 races) to be put in, the game is VERY playable at the moment. We're testing Tier 2 at the moment so all characters are starting at lvl 11. They just had a HUGE PvP even with 120 peeps per side. Folks, the performance is unbelievable considering the amount of people there.

Ok, playing a Chaos Chosen there now. These tanks look totally bad ass hehe. They use curses to debuff their enemies and the curse used refers to what you're fighting. There's a curse for melees, curse for ranged and a curse for casters.
There's also the Chaos Marauders. These guys are minimilist armor melee DPS. They get a neat ability that, depending on which branch they go, one of their arms mutates into a weapon of sorts. It's like a limb of nightmares, either a bone blade or a bone club or some sort of arachnid claw. Very high on the cool factor and their retarded damage really shortens up fights.
Been also having fun with the Dark Elf Sorcerers. Lots of big booms but they really shine with their, what I like to call, sleeper damage. For example, there's one debuff that drains will power (I think) and can be stacked three times. Once the timer goes off, the enemy recieves almost 200pts of damage per stacking (600 max). Great for PvP when someone is trying to run away hehe.
The Dark Elf Disciples of Khaine are their healers, but they don't look like it. They use soul energy, either gathered up over time or in battle by certain attacks, they are sword duel wielders that can give damage almost as good as they can heal it. VERY unconventional.
The Dark Orc (Orc equivalent of the Chosen) look like an Orc that fell into a blender with various weapons and armor pieces, got put on daquri, and then poured out. They are HILARIOUS to listen to. Unlike the Orcs of WoW that have a shamanistic majesty, these guys are extremely low brow, in the dirt, disgusting pigs. Wood is Wud. Basher is Basha. Chopper is Choppa. War is WAGHHHH!!! There's something to be said with certain quests where you get launched by catapult hehe.
Dwarven Engineer, LOVE these guys. Spanners and hammers are you melee weapons, but they really shine using their rifles. Their gun turrets that they drop are VERY powerful. They act like pets, but cannot move, so to place a new turret you have to build a new one. I like the fact they can fix them in the middle of battle too. Sometimes the turret kills more than you do at the beginning hehe.
That's just some of the low down on some of the classes.
If you haven't applied for beta, do so now!

To be honest, the later the better. The amount of polish they're throwing on this is insane. Very noticeable after each patch. I like how they test a level range for about two weeks, shut down for two to three days, then load up the next level range. They're going through with a pretty fine toothed comb. Will it be perfect? Probably not, but it will launch VERY nicely if the condition of beta says anything about it.

I'm guessing they want to make sure that everything is working well before release. They certainly don't want to risk another AoC launch. The game is almost ready for release as is, so they're basically putting in the final touches (mounts, cosmetic stuff, etc). Very solid effort on EA Mythic's part. The open beta is supposed to start next month, so get your apps in. Should be interesting to see how it holds up to a really big load.
