A British teacher detained in Sudan after her class called a teddy bear Mohammad was charged on Wednesday with insulting Islam in a move that sparked a diplomatic row between London and Khartoum.

Remember all the flack about the drawings of Mohammad a few years back?

I thought we were past this silliness?

This is a stupid reaction by the government. The kids named the damn bear, and who cares... It is a lovable teddy bear! :(

I thought we were past this silliness?Nope.

I remember the riots when some heathen blasphemed against my Lord with a statue named "Piss Christ". Those were the days. Many sinners met their true maker that week.

The last thing I read, and I forget where, stated that her male companion was also raped by the gang of attackers. Wonder why he is not being hanged as being homosexual?

Her lawyer's license has been revoked (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/11/21/AR2007112102232.html?hpid=moreheadlines).Lahem is accused by the prosecutor general of "belligerent behavior, talking to the media for the purpose of perturbing the judiciary, and hurting the country's image," according to an official letter he received Monday. No, dipshits, that lawyer is about the only thing not tarnishing your image right now.

Yes this issue is stupid and backwards, but...

According to wikipedia sudan is an islamic country (yes pay attention in world history class I know), so this teacher had to be pretty damned dumb to think they wouldn't get a "poor" reaction.

Actually, the "poor reaction" is seeming to be the minority, according to news reports and people being interviewed; most seem to think it silly that it was blown into this big deal since she obviously never intended any slight, and it was actually the students who determined the name. It is good to see that there is more rational thinking in Sudan than I had given credit for; but, the ultimate decision still rests with the folks that do not want to appear to have caved in to outside pressures.

What I don't understand is why they are upset over a teddy bear being called Mohammad.
It's not like they named a pile of excrement after the Great Prophet.

Heck, they weren't even naming it after him, they were using one of the student's names.
Can the teacher help it that 2 out of every 3 boys in the Middle East are named after the Prophet?

It kind of reminds me of the situation where Hispanic males are named Jesus.
Maybe a Prophet's name shouldn't be used as a Proper Name, any more?

It ended up a lot better then it could of at least... She just got her sentence.

15 days in prison and deportation. Much better then what i was fearing would happen.

This was a pretty ridiculous and silly situation, but the outcome could have been worse for the poor lady.

I'm just glad to live in a free country!

Thousands of Sudanese, many armed with clubs and knives, rallied Friday in a central square and demanded the execution of a British teacher convicted of insulting Islam for allowing her students to name a teddy bear "Muhammad."

It would be nice to see the muslim world rally around sunami, earthquake, or cyclone victims like they did about naming a teddy bear mohammed.

What would happen if one of them had a child and named him mohammed and the kid turned out retarded...would they be insulted?

My guess answer to Rover's question:

"No, for Allah smiles on the weak-minded. However, your question makes us all look like bloodthirsty lunatics, therefore you must die."

Have they set a date for stoning the teddy bear?
