NYT blames Bush for Sago mine accident....

I don't have a NYT account but found this paragraph on www.rightwingnews.com (http://www.rightwingnews.com) They have the article and link..

In an editorial piece today that should surprise no one, the New York Times chose to play the blame game with the horrible miner tragedy in West Virginia where 12 of 13 miners were killed (http://www.herald-dispatch.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060105/NEWS01/601050323/1001/NEWS) were killed in a coal mine blast accident. The NYT (http://www.nytimes.com/2006/01/05/opinion/05thu1.html?pagewanted=print):

Political figures from both parties have long defended and profited from ties to the coal industry. Whether or not that was a factor in the Sago mine’s history, the Bush administration’s cramming of important posts in the Department of the Interior with biased operatives from the coal, oil and gas industry is not reassuring about general safety in the mines. Steven Griles, a mining lobbyist before being appointed deputy secretary of the interior, devoted four years to rolling back mine regulations and then went back to lobbying for the industry.

But what the NYT does not tell you is that, since 2001, fatalities from mine accidents have dropped almost 50%. BizzyBlog (http://www.bizzyblog.com/?p=1190) has the lowdown. Make sure to check out the chart he created from the data that he found here (http://www.msha.gov/fatals/fabc.htm) on the Labor Dept’s website. Good detective work, Tom. He writes:

Contrary to what The Times would have you believe, the trend has been favorable (”reassuring,” if you will) for many years, especially the past four, where there has been a near-50% drop in fatalities. In fact, these results support the contention that staffing Interior with people who actually know their industry has led to greater safety.

Yep.

Shame shame on the NYT.

Why is that Fan?

The Media does NOT have an agenda against the Bush administration.. Stop it!!

I agree.. the only reason I even troll the media boards anymore is to keep up on facts to argue on this board with...

But did the bloggers divide by the number of coal workers? I doubt the coal industry has lost half its workers, but, if it did, a halving of deaths would mean a static indicator.

Nah, not saying it's merely against Bush actually. I'm tired of the media slanting it either way. Let me Read and Decide for myself the facts at hand.

Sadly I don't think there is a single news outlet that is objective and not spinning slants. If there is, I haven't found it.

So, "Whether or not that was a factor in the Sago mine’s history..." equals "NYT blames Bush for Sago mine accident....?"

Shame shame on your reading comprehension.

Sago had a terrible track record of mining safety, even compared to other mines in the state. Fault lies with those responsible for maintaining the best conditions in the mine, those responsible for ensuring compliance with regulations, and with capricious fate, which doesn't give a damn about any of us.

Wasn't the seed of Union power based in this very region and in this very jobfield? Union's primary goal used to be the safety of their constituents. Where were they on this dropped ball?

Well this is where NYT threw the baby out with the bath water. They start ok with "Both parties long defended". Then they blew it in the next sentance "the Bush Admin....." I agree though. There are no longer any true news outlets with true objective jurnolists. Everything is a op-ed masked as a news feature. Just pick the one ya like best I guess. Fox news is fair and balanced for me...:D
