"I'm their lifeguard,'' he told a reporter for The Davis (Calif.) Enterprise in 1999. "I'm there to keep the poachers and sport hunters away. I'm much more likely to be killed by an angry sport hunter than a bear.''

The Kaflia Bay area of Alaska's Gulf Coast -- where Treadwell spent most of his time in the state -- has long been closed to sport hunters, and Katmai rangers said there is no history of poachers killing bears in the area.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA OH THE IRONY!!!!!! It hurts!!!!
Take that flower power, and shove it up your worthless hippy ass.

Ok, I have seen bears up close and personal before, and the one thing I have *always* been told with Kodiaks (grizzlies , brown bears , whatever the fuck you want to call them) you never play dead.

I geuss he must have missed that part in the "How to not get killed and eaten by bears" Class

Fucking retard didnt even carry any sort of protection against the bears, and now it seems he put his tent in a spot specifically so the bears would come by it.

The only unfortunate part about all this, is they had to kill a few of the bears in order to retrieve his sorry carcass.

I applaud the bear. More hippies need to be made into snacks for carnivorous animals.

I think you have that wrong. Black bears you never play dead you fight them off. Grizzly/brown you try and play dead.

hunting guides advise you, depending on the nature of the attack, to roll up in a fetal position and interlock your fingers and your hands around the back of your neck and cover your neck and throat area with your forearms and elbows.

there isn't much you can do once you are attacked. the key is being aware enough and intelligent enough to avoid putting yourself in situations like these two fuckin idiots.

Or you just make sure to carry a gun, and shoot the bear repeatedly until hes dead.

Usually you don't even have to shoot the bear, just shooting off a couple rounds into the ground will generally drive animals away. Shooting an animal generally results in lots of paperwork afterwards.

I never spend time in wilderness areas without at least a pistol. Not only do you need to be able to drive off dangerous animals, but human predators sometimes are something to worry about.

i forget what to do when i bear comes up to you but i did remember there was a sign with detailed instructions on what to do every 10 ft when i visited alaska and remembered it while i was up there (guess those braincells were killed soon afterward :/ )

and although i chuckled at the irony, those on this board that are saying that 2 people getting killed by a bear is a good thing, need to get out more.

Two people getting killed by a bear =/= a good thing.

Two morons who deliberately ignored the advice of Fish & Game experts, and pretty much every official they ever talked to, and then went in without any sort of protection. (IE Bear mace, or a gun) get eaten?

I call that Mother Nature's way of saying

"Get the fuck out"

They were idiots, beyond even the level of your average eco-terrorists, erm I mean enviromentalists.

Things to remember when studying wildlife, and campaigning against poaching in Alaska.

1: Study animals safely
a) These means not setting up your tent in game trails and wondering why the bear is in your camp
b) doing it from a safe distance, crawling up to a mother bear and her cubs = stupid

2: Carry a large caliber gun, .45 or better
a) If you insist on using a smaller caliber gun, or cannot use one because of whatever reason, use bullets designed to fuck shit up, (E.G. Black Talons etc)
b)At the very least if you want to avoid hurting the animals at the cost of your own life, carry Bear mace, or even Fire crackers with you to scare them away.

3: Playing dead means they just dont have to fight so hard for their food.

4: Don't be a fucking retard and get eaten.

5: When protesting poaching and evil hunters... try doing it somewhere, where there is a problem.

no offense but Black Talons would be my very very last choice of bear repellant. the jackets on those bullets are designed to be effective against THIN skinned predators. they expand rapidly and efficiently. shoot a bear with a hollowpoint handgun round and you will appreciate my arguement. trackers and guides carry short barreled rifles of shotguns for the most part. if you were limited to a choice of handguns you would be far better served with a soft point or solid as your choice of ammunition. gulor's right about the threat of two legged predators being as big, if not bigger, threat than four legged ones and that would be a reason to carry hollow points in your sidearm but for protection from bears it would not be the best choice.

"Black Talons"

Elemak-

Those were outlawed in the states about 6(maybe more) yrs ago i believe.

P.S. After being in Wyoming for a few years around the Snake River and Jacksonville(The Grand Tetons) I learned a lot about wild life safety.

You fight brown bears and play dead with Grizzles.
Never get out of your car for Buffaloes or Moose(wait in the car. They do not find vehicles threatening but will try and trample people and dogs), and do not pet porcupines. (Tourists...unbelievable. Stay in your own country if you cant read the safety guide lines! or are not smart enough to avoid touching animals covered in barbed quills.)

Watching Tourists with there cameras who have Telephoto lenses get out of their cars to get close ups of buffaloes was mind boggling. But watching the ensuing chaos as the Buffalo decided to take out its frustrations on about 4 cars(when it didn't catch the camera man) was well worth the hold up.

Black Talons aren't illegal. they aren't banned.

lobbyists and legislatures put enough pressure on Winchester, because of an extremely successful marketing strategy, to make them decide to stop producing Black Talons for sale to the public. They still sell them to law enforcement and now Winchester loads the same bullet into a new round named the SXT which is sold to the rest of us.

you won't go to jail for carrying Black Talon's in your pistol.

I have done alot of fishing in the general area where this occured and bears are a daily sighting there. I carry a 44 magnum in a shoulder holster and a 45/70 with a .405 grain shot is usually on the bank when I am fishing and within grabbing distance at all other times. I have had a few bears that were a bit of a nuisance but generally they want nothing to do with you as they are busy gorging on salmon to fatten up for the winter. Rainbow trout fishing is incredible there btw ) My guess is that this bear was forced out of all the good fising areas as he was old and a bit surly. THe latest sounds like this fool set up his camp on a bear trail in such a way that the bears were forced to either wade through the water or tromp right through his camp. He asked for this problem imho. I have been bluff charged by a brwon bear before and it is not a fun thing. A big sow with two cubs charged to about ten feet then stopped and pawed at the ground a bit. I wasnt carrying a gun at the time which is unusual for me. Heh i had to go home and change my underwear )

A can of Pepper Spray will make a grizzly run for the hills. Shooting a bear and wounding it especially a grizzly is a very bad thing to do. Pepper spray has saved many from bear attacks and namely grizzlys in the Yellow Stone area. Talk to any elk hunting guide they will tell you the same. They go for the pepper spray before the rifle.

When I go deer hunting I bring my shotgun loaded with 1 round of buck shot and 2 slugs. Only time I felt threatened by a bear the sound of the buckshot worked fine. When back packing I bring pepper spray and a handgun. I probably would use the handgun before the spray. I just dont think I could wait for the bear to get into pepper spray range before I shot at it.

And yeah hippies who try to "commune" with large preditors will soon be removed from the gene pool.

Absolutely :) . it's a great round. feeds great in all my semi auto's, even some of my more high strung 1911's. if it won't feed the Golden Sabers, 9 times out of ten, it feeds the SXT's flawlessly.
