My roommate is interested in doing the MMORPG thing, and my girlfriend and I were thinking of rolling a character with him. We're already leveled up in EQ2 and spend a fair amount of time there, but we'd all like to try something different - preferably with a free trial.
So what are you playing? What do you recommend?

The only MMO I am playing is EQ. Other than that, I'm playing Gemcraft (damn you Sanchek), Tiger Woods 2009, and Guitar Hero World Tour atm.

Just get the latest version of Gauntlet, that's still four player right?

You know, thats the biggest complaint I can ever muster against Blizzard. Their products are always top quality. Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo were the best games in their categories, no doubt about it. The problem is, their development process is sooooooooooooooo long (2 years for an expansion without any new real features, just new content?) its borderline ridiculous. Sony has their problems with EQ2, but at least they can crank out content at a playable rate.
However, since we're looking for something to play very casually, WoW might not be a bad choice. Anyone try SWG or LOTRO or anything else in the category?

I played SWG years ago. It was fun for about 4 days.

Fable 2
Fallout 3
RockBand 2

EQ mainly, yes still after all these years, with a side splash of Warhammer online.
Love the Warhammer for it's pure mayhem. PvP is spot on there and provides plenty of challenge.

Vanguard is excellent now, but I don't know if it has a free trial or not.

I am on Vanguard. Got a 50 monk that I raid with and a 17 Rogue. Gonna roll a Death Night tonight as it seems to be a class that guilds are lacking.
I was a little miffed that monks got nerfed yet again, but still having a lot of fun playing.

WAR is very fun up until about level 15 or so. Then the repetitive nature of it starts to kick in full force and new game smell wears off.

Definately! great MMO for a first timer. you'll just have to learn to pace yourself as a MMO Vet.
keep fishing maxed. great time sink
dont twink! just go with quest rewards and world drops to keep the over power factor in check and your hunting will be more challenging.
hunt in stranglethorn! you'll spend so much time as a ghost you will easily add months to leveling time.(PvP servers)
Play on a PvP server(see above) be sure to make friends with a S4 lock just in case.
with the release of 3.0.2 they added achievments wich are a completey worthless waste of time with no actuall rewards. but fun as hell. BTW anyone know where the hell i can find a Ewe to /love?
BG < lvl 30 they can be fun. > 29 do it to annoy the hell outta the twinkers.

Two weeks and two days till Lich King. I'm not even fully used to all the changes from the 3.0.2 patch heh.
The world events, especially the Zombie event, in prep for LK have been great. Nothing like porting into IF and seeing hundreds of zombies running around in masses attacking everyone.

I think I played SWG longer than just about anyone, certainly up to the last big pile of crap. SWG is a broken game, missing players, with developers who show absolutely no respect for players when it comes to taking away achievements, skills, and classes that required years to develop. I stuck with it for a long time because I loved the space element and the SWG universe, but blech, no more. My advice is to steer clear, although you can get a free trial I believe through the website.
Tabula Rasa is fun, if a bit repetitive.
Single player I've been kickin' it old school. Search Amazon for games, and you can find plenty of single player games cheap. Jedi Academy should arrive later this week, about time I caught up.

VP Raid guild in EQ2 and play WAR for the fun of it. I really enjoy WAR, but I can see it growing stale unless they really add to the PVE side of it and flesh our crafting more. They also need server mergers in a BAD way. WAR is pretty well a grind to unplayable on low pop servers... A game so dependent on RVR fails with server pop issues.
Oh and a month here and a month there of LOTRO when I just want to sink into a story line with perfect lore to back it up. Best crafting in any MMO IMHO...

I'm playing WoW (much more casually than I used to) and City of Heroes (occasionally, when friends log on) atm; I also got to room 15 of Portal (the one where you have to fire the portal gun through the floor *while* falling and which, btw, is a hoot) in two sessions before I got distracted by work and other things and haven't been back to finish it.
Even for a casual, but reasonably focused when actually playing, gamer, Blizzard's latest nerfing of content into absolute pablum, as well as the idiotic 'achievement' giant easter egg hunt, really leaves me cold, although some of my guildies love it. As much as I was accused by some of my more 'leet' friends of running a day care disguised as a guild, the latest 'kitchen sink of free candy' approach in advance of the expansion is a bit too much and makes me feel like the whole thing has been turned into a day care, complete with milk and cookies (or chocolate cake, as the case may be ;) ).
Hopefully the expansion content itself will have *some* tooth at the 10 man level, or I just might have to go back to running my poor grav 'troller on 'invincible' solo missions again...
Regards,
Nydia

Nydia... go back and finish Portal. One of my favorite game endings of all time (the final fight and the end song... but mainly the end song ; ))
It shouldn't take you more than an hour or two to finish from where you are.

Oh man, Portal was great. Halflife 2 Episode 2 (whatever was in orange box) was good too, but I *still* can't beat the last boss. My roommate did it though and showed me what happens. Much easier on XBox than computer, control wise.

And ugh, I can't imagine trying to play HL2 without my mouse.

I only play WOW now. After returning to EQ1 last year then having to put it to the side again I just cannot say it is appealing to go back to all the grind again. RL just doesn't allow the time for EQ1 that it once did. EQ1 is a good raid mmo I will always say that, however, the time required to keep up with any real competitive guild is just to much these days.

Alas, I no longer have time to play video games, despite me still buying games to "put on the shelf". I keep telling myself that after I'm done with school I'll have time to play games again.
Hah. Fat chance of that happening.

I thought about the conan game, but havent played anything other than guitar hero and madden football on the console. Read Smedmleys MTV comments about bringing eq to the consule market which I think would be cool. Fooled around with civ 4 but jesus the turns and play just get old quick compared to an mmog.
But since I havent even logged into eq since oct 11 of last year, unless I win the lotto I doubt Ill have time or fiance points to even play again.

That's why I haven't gotten serious with a woman with the exception of 2: because they could appreciate my video game interests. My girlfriend has even started playing when I'm not home around. Never marry a woman who won't let you video game!

Same situation as Giena. No time for video games. Ocassionally manage to slip into a game of Europa Universalis, but other than that I'm hoping a holiday-break after Easter will give me some time to play the new Total War.
It's funny, I followed LoTRO development for about 2 years, and when it finally came out I never bought it! :P

Playing World of Warcraft again, took a break over the spring/summer and it completely revitalized my interest in the game. I'm really looking forward to WotLK, tired of yutzing around working on achievements and want more raid content, heh.

Still playing EQ, be it on the Rathe server now. Its one of those "off again" periods as far as raiding goes due to timezone and work constraints, but the new expansion has plenty to keep you engaged without having to raid. I am lucky to be in a guild that is competitive at the high end but is tolerant of those who have RL concerns that put raiding on the back burner. In the past, I tried WoW and Lineage II. WoW just seemed to not do much for me and Lineage was the worst kind of grind along with other annoyances from a game play perspective. I might try Vanguard next since its had time to mature and hardware has caught up with it to make it playable without spending a small fortune on computer upgrades.
For stand alones, I play Oblivion and Supreme Commander once in a while.
