View Full Version : Which zone do you miss the most?

Well, I assume most of us stopped playing EQ a long time ago, and I know we're all prone to bouts of nostalgia every now and then.
So I ask: which zone do you miss the most? Any expansion, any time, you name it.

For me, it'd have to be Qeynos and Qeynos Hills. Running around as a human (my first char all those years ago) and being mauled by wolves and gnoll pups never got old. And although I was soon to become an Erudite, Haloface, whenever I began a twink it would always begin in Qeynos, for memories sake.
Throw West Karana and South Karana on that list too. I'll never forget my first level 10 foray across WK, and finding out that no - houses do not keep you safe from giant spiders and lions. Doing a CR as a human in the middle of the night in some random farm in WK was a nightmare, but unforgettable.
And SK.. well who could ever forget bird house and treants back in the day?

What about you?

ps it's frightening how quickly I've forgotten most of the zone's names.

Which ever zone SSra Temple was in. That zone was like death city. Was my favorite zone to explore because rocks an d skeletons would jump out all the time out of no where.

I would had to say all the velious zones. With the sound up I would actually feel like I was cold.

I find it even stranger Halo that even after almost 2 years I really really miss playing EQ. It most certainly was an addiction thats unexplainable to people who never experienced EQ.

I spent a lot of time in ... Western...something...the one from Velious, with the Velium Hounds in it. Really cool dragons walking around that didn't want to eat me, great solo hunting, and no one around to bother me because the zone was difficult to reach and supposedly a death trap. I made a fortune selling hound furs for Mammoth Hide Cloaks. Beautiful zone too.

My second favorite would be...um...damn names, what was that cave with the Ry'gorr in it, Crystal Caverns maybe? Huge variety of mobs, very elaborate, and beautiful to boot.

Old Sebs FTW, many times getting banished by Trak, and getting SPANKeD the the Mushsroom Men. It was the first time I found out and learned to have some back up gear and weapons sitting in the back **way beforDoN came out and the corpse summon in the Lobby***

Holy crap favorite? I don't think I have just one. Old Seb was a fun and memorable zone and that place off of Dulak Harbor I can't remember the name something "n"? But starting as a High Elf and all the memories of gfay, crushbone, and castle mistmoore are good memories. EQ was my first MMO or really anything like it so those beginning levels were definitely once in a lifetime. And I still cherish them. :)

Plane of Hate.... the first time I joined a raid, the ink was still not dry on my level 46 "badge". Unfortunately, nobody told me that there was no zone-out. I went AFK for bio, came back to find the raid wiped and something wanting to eat me and my pet. I started to run while looking for the zone-out. Through sheer luck, I managed to run around the zone pulling a huge train... and sure enough... died right at the zone-in. Got me a "talking to" by a GM after they had to reset the zone. Something glitched and the mobs would not wander back to their spot. Even got a GM killed when he zoned in.

Chardok was a blast for me. Hell just getting there was fun. And they the whole one-way zone was a killer.

Seb and Guk ... with the nod to Lower Guk.

I did also enjoy the frogs in Plane of Storms if it were just me and Canonn two boxing. Laid back pulls that were fun singles.

Plane of Nightmare had some great models -- the nettling wraiths were one of the best in the game. The Hole was a great crawl in a neat environment, and I liked City of Mist. Lots of nostalgia for Karnor's trains and Kedge's uniqueness.

But nothing beats Burnt Woods!

I was always fond of Howling Stones and the Tower of Frozen Shadows, but most of Velious and Kunark were fairly good. I can't say I miss any of it. One real pity was that since they downsampled the original textures so badly at release, a lot of the "local color" in the original zone set was lost -- there were a lot of really funny and or mood-inspiring things that were smears and blurs for years.

I always liked unrest at the very beginning when bronze armor was considered high class and there was barely any high levels around. Sol A and B were fun even with the 2-3 day camps for Ragefire....

Way too many for different reasons.

Blackburrow, because of the friends I met there, and the learning of the game mechanics. And the inevitible trains to zone.

Howling Stones was a favorite from Kunark, along with Chardok where I finally felt useful as a Rogue on epic runs. Have to add Plane of Hate too. Seb was always fun to run through doing Trak checks.

Have to agree that Western Wastes was a great zone for soloing, with a nice atmosphere that fit the game. And Velks....what can I say? hehe

None of the Luclin zones ever really grabbed me.

All of the zones in PoP were really well done, artistically, and challenge-wise. While some were definite pains in the ass, they all had their own unique flavor that, if you were paying attention to the lore, enhanced the progression. Time was a blast.

Since PoP, the essence of the game is no longer as present in the zone environs as it was earlier. There might be some beautifully desinged graphics, and really sweet looking mobs that require a lot of strat and team work, but the sense of being connected to Norrathian history is not there.
But, I continue to play and have fun.

BTW, anyone else ever clean their kitchens while running along the shore in West Karana from Qeynos to North Karana, without SoW?

Orc High Way in the oasis and watching the uber druids who was able to successfully kite the giants that would cause havoc on the Orc Groups.

I still think instead of putting out a new expansion, they need to reinvent alll the old zones and make them relevant again.

You saved my ass in lower guk Bise, this is when I first met ya. Our guild at the time...Braveheart. Such a long time ago!

My favorite zone is Plane of Growth I think. It was fun that time when I singlehandedly wiped out Rest in Peace while in Casus Belli. They had a RiP bard "kiting" Eldrig the Elder near us while we were CRing....likely story! One Highsun later, and the mob gated right on top of them! holy shit that was awesome!

Love RiP now, but back then...fueds were fueds. :D

ToV is one of my all time faves. I remember camping HoT for hours and hours on end with Vision. One time we sat for 10 hours waiting for Dozekar to spawn with RiP down by his spawn point in one of the hallways waiting to tag as well. Ridiculous.

I really liked Lower Guk too. I remember being so scared the first couple of times. It took forever for me to learn my way around, and damn IvU! I remember reading about my Mask of Deception way before I was high enough to get it, and how happy I was when I managed to grab a rotting one. Big props to the Ghoul Lord? I think it was with the throne and the yakeshas. DONT SIT BY THE THRONE YOU WILL GET THE DT!

I really liked Befallen too when they had the Dark Elves there. It was really good xp and fun grouping at low levels.

'BTW, anyone else ever clean their kitchens while running along the shore in West Karana from Qeynos to North Karana, without SoW?'

- No kidding. Although there were far bigger zones, especially in expansions, being a lower level made WK and NK seem gigantic, and intimidating.

'Is it sad nothing is really standing out for me other than PoFear and Temple of Cazic Thule?'

- Hmm a bit, but maybe you had the most fun there?

BLACK BURROW!! Where I got my first 100pp and thought I was a studette! http://www.ayonae.ro/images/smilies/smile.gif

Old Oasis was great back in the day...You could get a group easily, get trained, do trains, and get buffs and rezzes almost whenever you wanted, no matter what time of day in that zone. That zone used to be VERY busy!

High keep was like that too except the bank was really handie there. It was great you could leave a group to go sell and be back before they pulled the next one....hehehhehe

I hated guk http://www.ayonae.ro/images/smilies/mad.gif I always got lost. I even had a printed out map beside my computer to look at while I ran through there and still get lost!! Would die and have to spend lots of plat to get some necro to get me out there...LOL

The new zones I like is Ikkita (sp?)...it is beautiful..they did a great job on it. They have done a couple of unique quests in there. They have one that is like playing a rubuz cube game. I must say it is different. I have found I like the new TBS...but that is me. http://www.ayonae.ro/images/smilies/smile.gif

There are quite a few zones I remember going to the first time and being actually scared to venture out because I did not want to die and not find my body....that aspect of the game made my stomach get all in knots venturing out for the first time...lol I would always have to weigh the "risk of adventure" to "do I have enough time to find a necro willing to get me and if I have enough in my bank to pay for the summon." The lobby they have now truly spoils me. http://www.ayonae.ro/images/smilies/smile.gif

Gads I ramble....bleh

I hated Guk also, got lost every single time I went there. Blearg.

My two fave zones though, South(ern?) Karana and probably High Keep or PoN.

I spent *hours* in Karana at the aviak village killing those things. Had some great times with lots of friends there. High Keep was fun when it was populated because it was basically non-stop action. You could start grinding and the next thing you knew, it was 5 hours later.

PoN was fun for me because I really started to learn how to charm kill there as a druid. Good times, good times.

I miss FoD :)

Running to Karnor's Castle and being curious about what was over the wall. Yup, you guessed it. SoW, Lev and running from the tunnel.... a few minutes later you're inside the wall only to find out that there is no way out.

Running across West Karana... yeah... clean the kitchen, do the dishes, laundry, change the oil in the car... you name it.

Blackburrow and the trains! Do it right and you got commanders, elites, snakes and everything else in the bottom of the zone.

Aye Lockjaw was the big oasis croc. And Cazel i think was the named giant there. I do remember spending 8-9 hours in plane of fear when it was newer with MANY repeated wipes due to mobs constantly killing anyone that came near to rezz. Finally the gm's depopped the zone before most of our stuff rotted.

Aye, of course you can never beat Blackburrow. I always felt sorry for those who started in Freeport, you just had nothing like that there for the lower levels. But then it was much harder to stay around Qeynos past level 12.. I always remember, every few hours in the evening, another would DING 12! and say "right, I'm off to Freeport!" and of course he'd be naked at Qeynos gates within hours. Couldn't resist a "How was Freeport?" on my way back to sell loot in Qeynos.

I'll never, ever forget my first Qeynos-Freeport run. Level 8, invisibility, with only the instruction: "STAY ON THE PATH, and FOR GOODNESS SAKE DO NOT GO THROUGH KITHICOR FOREST AT NIGHT!!!!"

Of course it was one of my most painful lessons in the game. Even at level 50 I was still invising myself and running along the east wall to get to Highpass Hold! :P

lmao .. that so much looks like and reminds me of a guild raid I was on once down there.. there was another guild jsut ahead of us in King's room just finishing up his guards as we were zoning in. We late made our way to his room and was waiting for him to respawn.. after sitting there for a while we thought we had another 10 - 15 mins befor respawn timer was up, so we pulled Queen's ( or was that Prince.. been a while forgot) room to us.. and just as she got there.. so many zones.. so many years of playing.. many of you might not know but I started long before as a bard named Rezner I knew Zommy before he was made.. when he was known as Oweapon. at that time i think Kunark was still newish my home was ocean's of tears.. alot of my friends hung out there one i can think of was a druid named Julea. I knew her from another online game and we came to EQ from there.

years later the bard didnt work for me so I made Gingeko by this time Kunark was out and I did alot of older zones but I can remember hours of grinding in Westwaste and Velk's with friends. soon after I joined the ranks in IVM and did earth for hours and hours for AA's.

I always loved trespassing in Permafrost. I remember the first time I zoned in there on a lark (this was around level 14 by the way, I was big enough to wander through Everfrost without too much danger finally!) after passing through the Ice Giant Place(tm). I didn't know there were ice giants there though, they were all dead. Zoned in, immediately got squashed by a goblin who was none to happy to see me. Oh well!

I remember making the run from Halas to Freeport (yeah thats right) with only one invis to last me the entire time. That was frightening. So many zones to go through where I was just hugging the wall in sheer terror of getting lost and/or eaten.

When I first rolled my character I played with Calamina (High Elf Mage), Wedri (Halfling Cleric), and Sotek (Gnome Mage). My first character was a Human Ranger in Qeynos. We all registered, started our characters, and realized we were no where near each other. LGuk was great, 5 hour waiting lists for camps were always fun! I loved my Haste 2h Sword (forget the name)

PoH was fun when I was still wearing my crafted set!

Howling Stones = Winner. Was almost always empty, great set up. Great drops at the time. Dual bloodpoints anyone???

Velks, who didnt like slipping on ice?

PoP had some fun set ups as well, I used to love boxing e2 with Krayton and killing minis or farming tradeskill drops. I used to /flex my e-peen when I could duo a mob that just wiped an entire group.

Fun times, but I would have to say it was the people I played with that kept me coming back over all the years.

I remember the final stages of getting my epic.... Canonn and I had found that dragon camp open in Sol B (ragefire or something?) after a repop. So we decided to camp it. 10 hours of a Friday night and into a Saturday morning we killed fire giants and other stuff to stay busy...all the while people would rotate in and out of Casus Belli to help with the camp/boredom.... then that dude popped..... In about 15 minutes we were ready to fight the dragon with 1.5 groups and woootttt !!!!! I was so happy/delerioius.

The final step in OOT was sort of a blue then holding my epic was one of the most awesome accomplishments to that date, and possibly to that time.

The time and effort it took me was phenomenal..... then I practically soloed the Rogue epic on my alt :(

I'd have to say I liked almost everything in the Kunark expansion, especially Howling Stones (for the wonderful crawl, it held up very well) and Chardok, but my sentimental favorite, based purely on the fact that it's where I first encountered those really crazy trains that make an enchanter mess up their panties, was Lower Guk. I first remember making the terror-fraught run/swim/crawl to the Assassin/Supplier room when I was L37 (being second-generation, the huge every-mob-spawn-camping crowds had left by then but certain camps were still highly prized), and Fyodor or whoever our rogue/tank du jour was flopping in with a huge pile of frogs on their tail while I frantically tried to lock them down as they backflipped and their little frog hands lit up in that tight space - sometimes Faervas and I would have to come down and bail them out and we'd see the endless wave, hopping down the hall....

I also miss the convival atmosphere in Lguk (and later Sebilis), where groups would be talking smack between the camps as we ground out our endless exp hamsterwheel and dreamed of the FBSS or Ykesha (well, my melees did, anyway ;) ), and clerics trying to sweet-talk me into their groups with promises of Death Pact and a really fast puller :).

Nothing, but nothing, however, broke my heart like when they remodelled Hate. Those and Fear breaks were the most fun I ever had playing EQ, bar none, even if it meant our only ever guild shot at the original Innoruuk was ruined by bugged out agro from downstairs. We had him at about 50% when the first chest came charging in, followed by a wave of everything left, it seemed, we hadn't killed down there... ;)

Mudflation, alas, eventually killed that playstyle (although the charming glory days of PoP weren't so bad), but I still have fond memories of the desperation AE mez blue flash and a huge pack of ravenous sarnaks, lizards (the old CT maze), or skeletons swaying rhythmically in unison, in thrall for a few brief moments, balanced on the precipice...

Regards,
Nydia

No edit!

The 'wonderful crawl' should refer to Chardok, not HS, although HS had its own charm in terms of sheer skeleton volume, for myself, our paladin, and Faervas :).

Oh great, thought I got over my intense and depressing EQ nostalgia from last month (hence this thread) until your detailed narrative, Nydia.

Damn you!

I gotta say that POHate was my favorite.
I wont ever forget the day i got my full set of Cleric (Purple ! ) gear.

My best experience in any game i have ever played though was getting my epic.
I will never forget it.
My heart still speeds up just thinking about that day.
Thank you Darius. :)

Yes Deecee...and you were the one to help me with my epic!! That long continuous camped ragefire spawn I figured sealed the idea of me never getting it. But I logged in...and YOU said...do you have your epic? What do you have done of it...lets get it done...I was floored...by the end of that day YOU rounded everyone up in The Imperial Order with Darus and I held my sprinkler in my hand....I know that feeling you speak of. I never dreamed I would ever have my epic let alone the very day that logged in!! THANK YOU!! *HUGS* :)

My first trip into Blackburrow. Barbarian Warrior, god... the tunnel into BB from Everfrost was dark!

I remember making a Wizard and getting root and thinking that it would be really cool now. I could root one of the gnolls on the ledge looking down into the pit in BB, root him and nuke away. Wow, what a train.

My favorite zone... that's a tough one. There were so many... all of them pre-Kunark though. Lake Rathe was so very cool and mellow. Swimming across the lake and wondering if the rumor that there was a sea monster were true... I liked LGuk and PoH. I can remember going to a buddy's house because he was in THE uber guild, Paradigm (sp?). I sat and ate popcorn, drank beer and was green with envy.

My most hated zone is easy, High Keep. I remember dancing around my livingroom when I made 35. I could finally get the hell out of there and go to SolB. Once there, I remember thinking how bad it must suck to be an Enchanter. I broke my desk one day because I died once and Enchanters were dieing ALL the time! (then I ended up playing one)

I would have to say I had a few:

Hanging out - EC back before the days of the bazaar. It was always a good time hanging out bsing with people and selling stuff.

"WTS Bag full of stuff at 2nd Torch!!"

Grouping - Velks, Seb, Oasis, Lguk... geez had more than I thought I would

Raiding - ToV (back when CRs were a thing of an art for SKs and Monks!)

Add one to the list - Tox Forest! I immediately got on the boat to Qeynos and spent my early levels around that area, but ironically I went back to Tox Forest when I had levelled up some (about level 8). I remember I had made mates with some Paladin in Qeynos Hills (we were both very unsuccessful in killing that wolf around the first Inn off the path from North Qeynos), and I thought it'd be cool if he came with me to buy some of my spells (maybe he liked the cut of my jib, if ya-know-what-uh-mean). Anywho, this was back before you could do an Alt-10 and make the annoying screen set-up change and for all the boxes to be a lighter colour (and, most of all, to get rid of those cream coloured boxes you used to start with as a newbie!) and you couldn't see bloody ANYTHING if it was dark on screen and daylight in your room. Anywho, so Tox Forest is completely dark, and we're running off in to the woods with me thinking I knew where some spell vendor was in the middle of the bloody zone.

Anywho, we're running around for a good 20mins not knowing where we were, him being a paladin human and me an enchanter erudite, we couldn't see a fucking solar flare up our right nostril, finally I think i've found the vendor. So I tell my new friend (potential lover... well, we're two men running around the forest on our own for a LONG time, it's bound to happen sooner or later) to check the right one for spells, while I check the left. It didn't matter, I reassured him, that they were looking a bit thin.

Hmmm.. I'm trying to check him. Why's he scowling? Incidentally, why's he red?

The next thing I know, my gay lover, err.. friend, next to me is having three buckets of shit kicked out of him by the skele guards to the entrance of err.. that zone before the Hole? Where naughty Erudites came from? Anywho, I start screaming and running around. He goes down like a sack of potatoes, and I do a runner in to the woods. I have no ultravision whatsoever, I still haven't figured out to press F-10, the sun is high in my window and I'm drowning in light, and Tox Forest is as dark as dark could be. I was literally screaming in my room and jumping whilst running, incidentally in circles, to get away. So I do a 360 and end up back at the entrance where my latin lover took one for the team. He's all like /consent dude so I can loot his stuff and bring it back to Qeynos for him (which was what happened, of course, before /consent meant drag). Finally having looted everything on his corpse, the skele's turn up and I am so bloody encumbered by his shitty leather armour that I can't move an inch an hour. So I start dropping his hard-won and prized possessions all over Tox Forest (his favourite 2h steel sword was the first to go), which he'd never know how to get back to, let alone find his body again, but it doesn't help and that little red bar was sinking fast. So I grabbed the power cord and pulled it out of the computer.

It's alright, they can't get me if I'm not logged in.

Short story is, I learnt a few lessons that night. Stay near the light, especially if you're an Erudite, get an ultravis item or spell, press F-10, don't have a Paladin as a friend, and turning the computer off doesn't mean you're no longer in the game.

Sorry if that story was long, but it's the same one I always told as Jokers went to raid in the Hole every few weeks and I would always stop to kill those same Skele guards. REVENGAY!
