Okay, so I'm not interested in the pvp aspect of WoW just yet. I'm only fresh to the game and barely hit level 12 before work today.
But, for curiousity sake when you see a local defense channel light up with "Crossroads are under attack" or some such. How do you engage the hated goodies?

Hey Fandros :)
Open field pvp can be engaged as soon as you 1) find the flagged interloper(s) (their name(s) will be in yellow), and 2) either initiate an attack on said person(s), toggle /pvp, or buff/heal someone on your own team who is engaging the enemy (their names will be in green :) ). Once you've flagged, the other faction's names that have flagged will turn red, and at level 12, it will mean that your greasing is likely imminent, although I've taken out a 51 palafilth that was attacking TM before on my level 27 hunter with a little help from the deathguards and a couple of other level 20s who jumped in... :).
Once you've flagged pvp, you'll stay that way for five minutes after you cease hostilities against the hated invaders. If you're getting graveyard camped, or are otherwise overrun, the safe bet is to wait out your timer, although at your level you haven't much to lose, and it's amazing how effective well-placed 'nuisance attacks' (especially sap/gouge, sheep, etc) can be even with the huge level differential...
If the message says 'The Crossroads is under attack!', that means that the Alliance is actually attacking, or agroing, PvP NPCs at the Crossroads. If it says 'The Mor'shan Rampart is under attack!', that means that they're molesting the Horde outpost near their Warsong Gulch entrance, due north of the crossroads right before you zone into Ashenvale, etc.
I'm late for work, so have to close this, but best of luck in your PvP adventures!
Regards,
Nydia

Thanks Nydia, much appreciated. Blasted goodies seem to think the Crossroads are their stomping grounds. I'll have to level quickly so my help is appreciated.

It's also a bit different if you're on a PvP server or not. I play on a PvP server, so someone else might have to correct me on how it's different on a normal server.
On a PvP server, it's different because you're automatically flagged for PvP once you enter a contested zone or zone owned by the opposite side/faction. Example - if you're a horde player, and you enter Ashenvale, you'll automatically be flagged as PvP and anyone can openly attack you (their names will be in red). If you enter The Barrens though, which is a horde owned zone, the alliance won't be able to attack you unless you have your PvP flag up (their names will be in yellow).
From my understanding, on a normal server you can never be attacked by someone else unless your PvP flag is on. You'll notice it by a shield that surrounds your face icon... an easier way to see what it looks like is to target an NPC that's flagged for PvP, like any city guard.
You get PvP flagged by attacking/buffing other people with PvP flags. I think you can also manually set it with a command on a normal server. This will be true regardless of wherever you go, including zones owned by the opposite side. Battlegrounds might automatically flag you... I'm not sure since I've never done one, let alone on a normal server.
In short, you shouldn't worry about being killed by the opposing force, unless it's something you've chosen to do.

Maybe I'm thinking of someone else, but I thought you were an avid EQ2 guy there Fan, and criticized WoW rather brutally... maybe it was someone else.. or something changed? :)
Anyway, what realm are you on? And dont rush the leveling - leveling in WoW (I found) was a great deal of fun when you actually went out and did everything that you could that the game had to offer. And you can start PvP'ing in WSG (and soon AB) at 21 (20 with the new patch) which is a lot of fun - no MC/BWL equipped guilds walking all over PUG's. :)

Alliance likes to kill the lowbies, regardless that they get no honor... If you find yourself somehow flagged and you didnt want to be, just run east to Sergra (sp?) and she'll put a whooping on them for ya. :)

Yup I said it. I did dive deep into EQ2, leveled up and made it to a good raiding guild. But got bored at the high end, it's not the same. So I joined up with WoW to make contact with a few friends. It's very similar to EQ imho, love the graphics but man it's lacking for me still.
I decided I needed to check out WoW inorder to keep my feet wet. Retired from EQ2 and still need a lil.
Fandros<---once again...thanks Drakz!!!!

I dont believe I was criticizing him (if I deciphered your post correctly, Valkyrie...), but merely confirming that I hadnt gone senile yet - and it was more of a segue into asking him why he chose to go to WoW given that he was a vocal opponent to it - just out of idle curiousity. Since he answered it already I dont have to ask. :)
As far as alliance raiding horde low-levels, it goes both ways. While leveling up my main (and subsequent alts) there's arsehole horde killing quest NPC's for no reason - though this has substantially reduced with the DK system. Though some still do it with characters that they dont care about the honor system with.
Anyway, for Fandros - dont judge the game too much just by what you've seen at the low levels. As with many MMO's, the max level to high end raiding is significantly different from the leveling stage. Some like it and some dont - I personally love it, but I'm sure we'll see a reply from someone that hates it (yet oddly still plays).
I do hope you find the same enjoyment that I find in this game though, Fandros. :)

There was a ton of horde ganking alliance newbs on my server. They would roam in packs and just slaughter the little suckers. Was sad really.

I play on both PvP and normal servers, when I still play WoW.
I must admit it was quite a thrill taking out a warrior eight levels above my Rogue the first time (although I made sure the mob he was fighting took some hp away first, heh). PvP can be a blast, but can also be extremely frustrating when quests are continually interrupted.
But it has also been fun and more challenging on the normal server working toward lvl 60 strictly solo the entire way, just to see how much of a pain it would be (lvl 52 now).
WoW is fun in a lot of ways, but I feel it really lacks the depth of EQ. It is more of an alternative when bored, and has the advantage of being able to accomplish some stuff fairly quickly, as opposed to the EQ games. Hope you enjoy your pursuits in WoW, and take your time moving up through it.
