It's the Obama administration testing it's species specific bio weapons!! after these tests it wont be long till they release the final product. a weapon thats targets and takes out republicans leaving democrats and green party members unaffected!

Don't be too quick to pull that trigger tho!

Right now the 'Republicans' are challenging the government's "right" to force people to buy health insurance, and apparently at least one judge has ruled against the administration on this. I want my opportunity to ask these alleged 'Republicans' if they will also be challenging citizens being forced to buy auto insurance. I know our hypocrite almost-former governor Pawlenty wanted to make our Attorney General challenge President Obama's health care law, but I can find no record of him challenging the auto insurance rules.

If we use the special weapon on them too soon, who knows what all we will be getting forced to buy?

And on topic: there was discussion on the radio this morning related to the side affect of New Year's Eve fireworks having something to do with the large bird kill.

To be fair, That's a bad comparison. The Federal government doesn't bend the interstate commerce clause to force you to buy auto insurance, and state governments don't force you to buy auto insurance unless you drive on public roads (and not even all states do that still). Mandatory auto insurance for drivers on public roads is vastly different, both legally and ethically, than forcing people to buy health insurance just for having been born.

I would generally agree with it anyway if they'd had the balls to include a public option, but it's just asinine to include an IRS-enforced mandate and barely any price controls on the only options available.

If we go with the fireworks effect are we then to assume it's just a coincedence that a large number of fish died.

I really don't want to go all tin foil hat, but isn't this some of the crazy stuff that 2012 and other natural apocalypse movies start with.

Re: the birds, these things happen fairly often. It's not uncommon for a big migration of birds to get zapped together by cloud-to-cloud lightening. That's especially likely since they all fell in a very small area. Mix in some high-altitude fireworks around new year's and there's way too many normal explanations to get out the tinfoil just yet.

Just watching the latest "news" piece on this, and they have found no sign of any toxic gas in the birds via autopsy, but are seeing blood clots that they say are signs of trauma, and speculation of sudden updrafts colliding with a flying flock are being posed as a possible reason for the kill.

Meanwhile, Rush is blaming Clinton ....Sarah is blaming all that 'changy - hope' stuff.... and Biden is just saying "what the fuck is this all about?", while President Obama has extended his vacation.

Bird kills really aren't that uncommon, migratory flocks can have hundreds of thousands of birds in traversing a small area. Serious inclement weather, even that only kills a tiny fraction of them, still adds up to a lot of feathers.

That's a lot of lightning over the course of 2 days. Especially that extremely nasty under-water lightning.

I know, of course, that you know more than the worlds leading scientists, so I will have to suppose lightning was also the cause of the 90% of the world's bee population dying off, all of those whales beaching themselves and of course the lightning-spawned fungus killing off over a million bats as well, yes?

"Worlds leading scientists", huh?

Mass bird kills aren't uncommon. The US Geological Survey documented 90 mass deaths of birds from June to December last year. Over the past 30 years, it counts 16 events in which 1,000 birds or more suddenly died.

I guess not the ones that work for the USGS.

How about one that knows more about birds?

At any given time there are "at least ten billion birds in North America ... and there could be as much as 20 billion—and almost half die each year due to natural causes," said ornithologist Greg Butcher, director of bird conservation for the National Audubon Society in Washington, D.C.

The dead birds found in Arkansas are of species that normally congregate in large groups in fall or winter. "The record I've heard is 23 million birds in one roost," Audubon's Butcher said.

"In that context, 5,000 birds dying is a fairly small amount."

Maybe he's just a skeptic. How about one that's actually in the area?

"They collided with cars, trees, buildings, and other stationary objects," said ornithologist Karen Rowe of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.

"Right before they began to fall, it appears that really loud booms from professional-grade fireworks—10 to 12 of them, a few seconds apart—were reported in the general vicinity of a roost of the birds, flushing them out," Rowe said.

"There were other, legal fireworks set off at the same time that might have then forced the birds to fly lower than they normally do, below treetop level, and [these] birds have very poor night vision and do not typically fly at night."

So, calm down, chicken little. This is just like how we had to see a front-page CNN headline for every goddamn 3.0 magnitude earthquake for two months after the Haiti quake.

Same story with the fish:

Fish, too, are susceptible to environmental stress, including extreme cold. The cause of some 2 million spot and croakers going belly-up on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland is probably linked to an uncommonly cold early winter, biologists there say. Similar fish kills were observed in the bay in 1976 and 1980. The past decade – not to mention the past month – has been one of the snowiest and coldest in many parts of the US, including the South.

Similarly, a wash-up of several hundred snapper fish on New Zealand's Coromandel Peninsula on Tuesday was linked to weather conditions that caused starvation, according to the New Zealand Herald.

It's been drifting all along:

It would be more alarming if it stopped than if it continued normally shifting.

I knew the magnetic poles drifted, but I didn't realize the discrepancy between magnetic north and true north was that large. Nearly 20 degrees off only 100 years ago?! And I thought they typically only moved within a range of a few degrees or so.

Huh.
