M3 or M5 both current generation (not the next 05-06 models)
Both 6 speed.
Which one would you get?

If cash isn't an issue, the M5.
DAMN I wish M3's still came with 4 doors.

They actually wind up being the same price (nearly) in the end.
I'm leaning towards the M5 as it has 4 doors, a big trunk etc. Not to mention a hefty V8.
I think the next gen "M3" will include an M4 with four doors, that's rumored to be a 400hp V8.
I'm not waiting around for that shit though, 2+ years till it hits the streets, 25k dealer mark up, and bound to be plagued with flaws during the first few years.

I'm really not willing to spend that much cash on a car. If a, say, 3 year old 4 door M3 existed,it'd probably be within my price range.
I'll need a car for the wife (read: me most of the time) before 2 years. I need something fast. DAmmit.

This thread is out of my tax bracket....by alot  (US Military)
If you can afford one new now, than wait a few months and get both Pre-Owned.
Paying for a new car is stupid these days if you want a good deal. With the quality of them being up, along with the dealer mark up that gets depreciated once you take it off the lot, and all the bugs that new cars get, its best to buy a luxury car used. Of course if money is what you whipe your ass with when you use the toilet, then, whats the deal? You need help picking out a color? Just go buy it, drive it a few weeks until you get bored, and then drop another 50-100k into it to soup it up.
If it was me, I would buy a new Mustang ( the new body style coming out) or a 2004 GTO..or an old muscle car and take the rest of that 50k left over and invest it in something more likely to yield a good positive return on investment. I am just an unsophisticated Redneck though, happily immune to the pressures of having a Hollywood address.

I'm typically 110% behind the buying 1-2 years used philosophy, but you shouldn't ever do that with a performance car. Your typical M owner probably does 5+ years worth of wear to the car in that first year.

Shop hard, and you'll find a car of this type that costs probably $5k more than a top of the line new Mustang (though the new Mustang is a beautiful car).
There's a reason the 2004 GTO doesn't sell well. No one wants it.

Aside from the poor build quality of the previous Mustangs, I'm one of the few people who finds the new Mustang grotesque.
The GTO looks like a cool car, my uncle used to have a old GTO and raced it, driving around with him is what got me into cars. Still not what I'm looking for though.
I just sold my car a few days ago, and am driving around in my brothers 04 Civic EX sedan, not a bad little car.
Looks like I'm gonna go with the M5, though it will obvously have to be used/pre owned as they have terminated production over a year ago. I'll have to pick from whats available at the dealers or on ebay.

Sporty coupes and sedans are not a hot market right now. The best seller in the US is still the SUV and the luxury pick up truck. I don't think the GTO is really looking to be a mainstream product, in that its really taking aim and combining European refinement with American raw muscle. It was not created to be a run away mass market best seller, thus the higher price. Considering where its made (Australia, by GM's Holden division), that does make a good amount of sense. I think the US has more in common with Australians than Europeans as far as their tastes. The Mustang is also not looking to be a completely main stream car, as it really is the last of its kind. The "Pony car" has all but vanished with the demise of the GM F-Body platform Firebird and Camaro. Still there was a good demand for the Mustang, but people get tired of all the cheese as far as quality. A band around as long as the Mustang deserved better.
Anyway, most want room for practical concerned created by having a family in the 'burbs, or a place to stuff lots of gadgets and buddies. Cars like the M3, M5 and the "lesser" American counterparts are really just a niche market. If you are looking to buy one, its because you had your heart set on getting one and when that happens, its not a question of dollars. Otherwise it all boils down to what your wife wants (and lets you get).

Coupes are always lower volume than their 4 door counterparts.
It's easy to say "SUVs are what sells now" but that statement ignores the Accords, Camrys and Tauruses of the world. In any case the market for performance sedans has grown dramatically in the last 5 years.
I'm sure you like the GTO. The fact is, it isn't selling, and GM is pretty unhappy about it. Perhaps, eventually, unhappy enough to realize that people don't most current GM design ideas. But probably not.
Back to a car for Marz...
I'd buy a Maxima in a second if they hadn't ruined the looks. Also, I don't know that mods are available for 330s. Maybe that's a route to check out.

The "GTO" is not even a new design. It's a rebadge Austrailian Moreno or is it manero? Shit I should have looked it up. Oh well it's a rebadged pontiac sold down under. I was watching a car show on speed vision and they were very disappointed with its fit and finish.

speed vision isn't happy with the car unless its pulling in over 450hp or has a turbine engine

Its a more performance oriented version of the BMW 3-Series or 5 Series.
Typically it trades some emenities for more horses, less wieght and better handling then the more yuppie oriented base car.

I agree with you Sanchek but if you profile the owners, you can find one that ended up in an old lady's garage or something.

True, but too often you don't have access to the owner by the time you get to the car.

After 2100 miles of driving in less than 48 hours, let me just say, Fuck Iowa. Fuck Iowa up it's asshole. I have never seen worse drivers on the highway, truckers included. It was like the F1 championship of 18 wheelers with brain dead normal drivers mixed in for annoyance.
Driving through Colorado and the rockies was stunning to say the least. I only wish I had more time to explore all of it.
