Seems like a mp3 player full of audiobooks would be alot more convenient for doing active stuff like working out.

I downloaded the eReader app on my iPhone just to see how it looks. I just don't think I can get used to reading books on an electronic device I'm too used to holding a book in my hands. Plus I went to ereader.com and checked out their book prices and LOL'ed they are charging the same as I could buy one from a store. Seems silly to charget that much.

You'd want to see the electronic ink before deciding that, probably. Something like an iPhone couldn't begin to compare.

Personally, I have never been able to focus on an audio story in the same manner I can on a visual one; I either get distracted or fall asleep, which I guess is a distraction in and of itself.

Aye... theres is just something about READING a book that makes it immersive to me. Hearing it read doesn't do it. I think its part of the reason that I'm a slow reader. I read and digest at a certain speed while I picture things in my mind. With someone else reading, I'd have to go at their pace.

Yeah audiobooks are not for everyone. I guess it might help that my parents read to me almost everyday until I was 10-11 so listening to a well told story is easy for me. There are some great ones out there though which can enhance the story.

I had a long post written but realized it would be better if I just made a new post, so off I go!

I hate to bump this thread, but I am looking at new sony with the light or the kindle 2. How are you liking your sony? will it do text to speech for you? I want something that I can hook up my bluetooth dongle and while i have it on my desk it will read to me while i do mind numbing work in the server room....tired of my mp3's and well i need to get some certs done lol. I also like the idea of having a small portable device rather than lugging books along with all the other crap i have to take to work on a daily basis.

Wheel of time is great I enjoyed them all. Would be better with about a thousand pages less of braid tugging and Fail I mean Faile.

I really love my Sony Reader, but the model that I have will not do what you are looking for. I have not looked into any of the new models of the Sony or Kindle, so I can't say if any of the devices are able to do Text-To-Speach.

As to the book formats, when I got my Reader, I downloaded Book Designer and was able to convert stuff to the Sony format. I am not sure if Book Designer can read the Kindle format (I don't have it in front of me currently), but if it can, you should have no problem converting.

I was pleased with how well Book Designer worked. I was not able to find The Wheel Of Time on either Sony's service or Amazon's. I DLed it from a torrent in some other book format, used Book Designer to convert to Reader format, at it works perfectly.
