Well there are some companies that make a ton, that way, but not most. SOE, Cryptic, NCSoft and other companies like those have been switching games that are otherwise failing or are too dated to compete. Champions Online, D&D, Star Trek, City of Heroes, EQ2, DCUO, etc.

Very few major titles launch FTP/MT, and it seems to mostly be second teir or less successful MMOs.

Aside from SOE's customer service failings, SWG illustrated a lack of integrity. If you were playing when ... I can't remember the names, the volcano planet expansion came out, they plugged the hell out of class benefits. A month or so after the expansion was when they rolled out the NGE, and removed the very classes the expansion had promoted. From a client standpoint an MMO is an investment - so this was invest your time to level a character, pay a monthly sub, buy an expansion promising class benefits, and then lose it all.

I realize it's a game, nothing is written in stone for any of these, but that was a pretty big FU from the bigwigs running the game.
